Rare Spotlight: Robin Mills

Welcome to the Rare Spotlight, a place to shine light on those rare gems that illuminate the world, unnoticed.  They are poets.  They are artists. They are singers.  They are musicians. They are visionaries molding beauty against the backdrops of their passions.  They are beautiful, and we should pay attention.  Welcome to the Rare Spotlight.

She is a woman of many talents, and quite frankly, you'll enjoy them all.  Artist.  Poet.  Businesswoman.  Promoter.  Motivator.  Mother. Sister. Daughter. Friend.  Cool.   It is my pleasure to introduce to you Ms. Robin Mills.  Take one look at her paintings and you'll understand the power of emotion and vision captured in brushstrokes and spread across canvas to be shared as a gift.  Listen to her talk about promoting local businesses and you'll become moved by a lover of her community, eventually willing to believe that you too can make a difference.  Hear her words flow from her pen to receiving ears, and be lifted into awe for so much talent spilling from the same veins.  A North Carolina native, Robin is constantly creating, constantly organizing, constantly uplifting, and forever inspiring.  Whether through her business, Wall Tales, which specializes in murals, creative wall designs, and original paintings, or through her projects, Breathe to Think and Visual Artists Realm, Ms. Mills is always doing whatever it takes to promote her talents and those of others.  I gratefully extend this bit of spotlight on Robin Mills.

Questions:

1) Name/ Stage Name
I am Robin Mills, A School of Thought, Wall Tales, Breathe to Think, The Visual Artists Realm and The Exchange Vendor Market

2) Current City/Hometown
Raleigh North Carolina

3) Right now, you are (literally)
typing these words on this page answering a questionnaire that I sent you out the blue and having fun doing it.

4) When did you fall in love with art?
I was born that way. Art is natural to me.

5) Describe yourself in one paragraph
One of them plays with words while the other one writes them down. One of them hears rhythm in every sound. One marvels over paint while the other plays with a brush. One dives into a project with a lover’s lust. One is a daydreamer all of the time. One takes to the stage and shines. One can tell stories. One can hear. One can see. One knows no fear. One is a philosopher to the bone. They are all Africans far from home and all live deep in my heart and dome. They set the pace they set the tone…in my world…in my home. They represent the one you see when you look directly at me.

6) Five years ago, you were.....
Five years ago I was finding myself and defining what it is that I was put here to do. I was laying a foundation, upon which I build.

7) Five years from now, you want to be.....
In five years I expect to be successful in all aspects of being. I expect the freedom of movement.

8) Your entire day is ruined unless you can.....
It is hard to ruin an entire day. That’s 24 hours in a purely negative state. People are my greatest disappointments and have been known to steal my joy for a spell. But it never lasts. It’s my joy and I won’t let anyone or anything have it anymore,

9) If you were a color, which would you be, and why? (Lol..I had to throw in one of these type questions)
I’d be Black. Because. You can’t mix black. You can mix yellow and blue and get green.....

10) One moment in your life, when you were the proudest.I don’t know that I have ever been proud. I’ve been excited and pleased with myself and the way of things. I have been pleased about many things

11) One moment in your life, which you regret mostI could write a book. But I don’t dwell on regret. What can I do about it? If I could fix it it would not be a regret.

12) Write whatever you feel- I am a writer, visual artist, performing artist, art agent, promoter and educator.....among other things

• Owner of a business based in Raleigh NC...but servicing everywhere called “Wall Tales” specializing in creative wall design, accent walls, framed phrases, creative yarn design and original oil and acrylic paintings.

My 2011 Wish List

Okay, so Christmas is approaching fast, and I'm seeing all of this interesting stuff that I'd love to have.  Unfortunately for me, most stores don't take IOUs.  But here are a few items that make me wish they did:

1)Playstation 3

Ever since my first one died on me (google PS3 Yellow Light of Doom), I've been planning to get another.  Of course, now they come in the slim variety, which isn't backwards compatible, but beggars can't be choosers.  $299.99

2)  Sony Ericsson Vivaz or Vivaz Pro

To me this is like having a cell phone/digital camera combo.  The 8.1 megapixel cam on the Vivaz literally has me drooling.  The Vivaz Pro downgrades to a 5.1 megapixel cam, but adds a full QWERTY keyboard for text junkies such as myself.  Both record stunning HD videos, and while they aren't Android phones like the Sony Xperia, I prefer the extras of the Vivaz.  But honestly, anything is a boost compared to my Samsung Freeform.  $99 w/2 yr. AT&T activation ($349.99)

3) Nikkon Coolpix S8100 Red

This is one of two items on my list that I would probably wait on, if I had to choose, but is so awesome that I'd snatch it up in a second.  We've all seen those annoying Ashton Kutcher commercials.  But as irritating as he is, the camera still manages to shine.  And while it's not as powerful as say the Kodak Easyshare Z981, it does look a heck of a lot cooler.  $249.99

4) HP Envy 17 with Beats Audio

They let Dr. Dre design the audio system in a laptop!?!  Isn't that like some hip-hop heads' wet dream?  While this is not the most powerful laptop you can get for the price, it is one of the most stylish.  And the sound is truly awesome.  But it's Dr. Dre.  What did you expect?  $1299.99+

So there you have it, if I had $2000 to spend, I'd jump on this list.  Oh well....wishful thinking.

Super Sundays: Week 12 Edition

Feelin' kind of Sunday indeed!!  Which means it's NFL time, and I'm ready with my predictions.
Okay, so I'm 7-8.  But I never said I was any good at this.  Just an avid fan with an opinion on EVERYTHING.  Like the Vikings firing Brad Childress.  As a fan, I think my team finally did the right thing, but about 2-3 weeks too late. Good luck to Leslie Frazier as the interim coach.

So let's get it in. (Granted, I missed a few games on Thursday.  My bad, but the turkey was delicious!)

Remember, if you're going to gamble, don't use the baby's college money.  Or the light bill money.  Or any money that your ignorant ass can't afford to lose.   In fact, for those of you that have considered using any of that type of money, it'd probably be best if you don't gamble. Just a thought.

Enjoy the games

NFL Week 12 Predictions
It's do or die for a lot of teams in the league this week, as chances for making the playoffs are getting slim.  Those teams in the driver's seat are looking to cruise into the top seeds.  And then there are those teams without much left to play for.  Look at teams like the Bills, Lions, Cowboys, and Bengals to all play potential spoilers from here on.

Feature Games

Green Bay (7-3) at Atlanta (8-2)  21-28

This is going to be one of those games where the last team that scores wins.  I don't think Atlanta gets the respect that they deserve, but with a 5-0 home record, I think they pull this one out against one of the best offenses in the NFC in Green Bay.

Jacksonville (6-4) at NY Giants (6-4)   28-17

I know you think I'm crazy.  But the NY Giants are one big lost away from imploding like they did last season.  And Jacksonville's defense seems to step up for games they're expected to lose.  The bottom line is that Eli Manning is a couple of great receiver performances away from joining the Brett Favre list (don't even get me started on him!!!).  Jaguars dominate early.

Philadelphia (7-3) at Chicago (7-3)  14-17

As much as I hate to admit this, these are the best two teams in the NFC.  And Chicago's defense is like no other.  The high-powered Philly offense will stall at Soldier Field.  Although Cutler's group is anemic, look for some big time tight end play from the Bears, which will be just enough to seal the win.

Tampa Bay (7-3) at Baltimore (7-3)  10-28

Raheem Morris, coach of the Buccaneers, called his team the best in the NFC.  Ironically, that was the same week they lost to another NFC team.  Baltimore is definitely among the best in the AFC, which is a whole different monster.  Look for it to be a long day for Tampa's offensive line.

San Diego (5-5) at Indianapolis (6-4)  24-17

It'd be crazy to go against Peyton Manning now, right?  He's ticked about losing to Brady.  His team is perfect at home.  The Chargers are just getting to .500!!!  And then I say "Phillip Rivers".  And suddenly it all makes sense.  The former NC State star (had to throw in a Carolina area shoutout...lol) is playing some of the best football he's ever played, which is really saying something for one of the league's upper-eschelon QBs and perennial pro bowl candidate.  The problem is that this is the type of game where Indy starts missing guys like Joseph Addai and Dallas Clark.  This will feel like a playoff game and the loser just might end up watching the playoffs at home this year.

The Other Games

Steelers (7-3)   28
Bills    (2-8)    3

Panthers (1-9)    7
Browns   (3-7)   24

Vikings  (3-7)   28
Redskins (4-6)   17

Titans   (5-5)   13
Texans   (4-6)   21

Dolphins (5-5)   24
Raiders  (5-5)   17

Chiefs   (6-4)   35
Seahawks (5-5)   21

Rams     (4-6)   21
Broncos  (3-7)   10

49ers    (3-7)   17
Cardinals(3-7)    7

Rare Spotlight: Amanda Stockham

Welcome to the Rare Spotlight, a place to shine light on those rare gems that illuminate the world, unnoticed.  They are poets.  They are artists. They are singers.  They are musicians. They are visionaries molding beauty against the backdrops of their passions.  They are beautiful, and we should pay attention.  Welcome to the Rare Spotlight.

Listen to her speak, and you're immediately taken in by a voice that is as inviting as her pen.  Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce Amanda Stockham.  From listening to countless shows on Blog Talk Radio, I discovered in Ms. Stockham a creative mind and spirit that shines many times over.  Born in Michigan, Amanda continues to elevate the masses, whether through her blog, her weekly radio program, or her poetry that channels emotions and creates many positive experiences.  She is also co-owner of Freedom Ink, an innovative publishing company.  The spotlight shines brightly on Amanda Stockham.

Questions:
1) Name/ Stage Name
My name is Amanda Stockham. My stage name is “Paradyme” and I have been using that since ’04.

2) Current City/Hometown
I currently live in Benton Harbor, MI. I grew up in Michigan, and lived in Atlanta for a few years.

3) Right now, you are (literally).....
LOL. Filling out this questionnaire that I am so honored to have been asked to write. Also, laughing at my twin sons watching G.I. Joe.

4) When did you fall in love with poetry?
When I was about 12. I started reading Maya Angelou and also Edgar Allen Poe (The Raven). I have always loved to read. I never believed then there would be a day that someone would call me a Poet though. Still blows my mind. To me it’s a journey and I am not there yet.

5) Describe yourself in one paragraph
I am a big bag of contradictions. However, the things that stay constant are that I am great person. I am loving, loyal and honest.

6) Five years ago, you were.....
I was working as a CNA and never thought in a million years that this would be the direction my life has taken. I love it.

7) Five years from now, you want to be.....
Exploring my creativity and still moving forward.

8) Your entire day is ruined unless you can.....
Listen to music. No matter the genre, I love my music.

9) If you were a color, which would you be, and why? (Lol..I had to throw in one of these type questions)
Just as my favorite color changes, so would my answer to that question. I am so orange today. That will change in five minutes though.

10) One moment in your life, when you were the proudest
When I finished my first book of Poetry. It was something that I never thought that I would do, yet at the same time always wanted to.

11) One moment in your life, which you regret most
I don’t use that word. I refuse to spend a single moment regretting anything. I make a choice and I move on. The only thing that I could possibly regret is not believing in myself sooner in life. However, that gave me the point of view to be able to relate to people who are still struggling to find out who they are.

12) Write whatever you feel
I feel hungry. I still haven’t eaten breakfast. I want some sausage but I don’t eat pork. I wish turkey sausage wasn’t so bland. I recently tried Almond milk it’s the bomb. Random I know, but you asked.

Rare Spotlight: George Yamazawa Jr.

"....and my goal is to really win in my daily life more so than competitions, to really be able to encourage people with my life condition, more so than my poetry."

With this quote, I introduce George Yamazawa Jr., an outrageously talented young poet who already stands on the cusp of greatness, as much through his demeanor as his ability.  Born and raised in Durham, NC, George began to participate in slam poetry, during his freshman year of high school, and has been a force to be reckoned with ever since.  Recently a high school graduate, and currently a college student, George continues to be an example of the positive accomplishments this generation is capable of.  As a member of the Bull City Slam Team (2010 NPS Finalists, 2010 Southern Fried Champions), Sacrificial Poets, as well as a participant in many competitions, workshops, and slams, including Brave New Voices, George continues to motivate and inspire the youth of today with his pen.  His performances spark the heart and mind with poems that range from cultural to conscious to humorous, and he has a stage presence that demands notice.  I remember seeing a video of one of his performances and thinking 'this is the future of poetry'.  It is my pleasure to shine the spotlight on George Yamazawa Jr.

Questions:
1) Name/ Stage Name
George Yamazawa Jr., "G"

2) Current City/Hometown

Happy Thanksgiving

Been up since like 6 a.m.  Today has been awesome, spending time with family, and I really wish it was like this everyday. (I believe if we strive to make it as such, then each day can feel like a special occasion, but that's just me.)  So today, I give thanks, as on all others, for my life, my health, my faith, and the family and friends who continue to remind me that I am blessed beyond compare.

And I also give thanks for poetry.  You have been with me always.  May we do, together, what God has intended.  Have a blessed day everyone, and continue to be thankful.

(Had to finish this post with an awesome poem, by Carlos Andres Gomez, that sums up being thankful for something in amazing verse.)

If I Had a Bookie, I Would Be......? (An NFL Recap)

Okay, so earlier this week, I gave my predictions for Week 11 of the NFL.

Right now, all I can say is....good, Brad Childress finally got fired!!!  (And I say that only as a Vikings fan ready to see my team move on.  No disrespect to Chilly, who will probably be feasting it up this Thanksgiving since he's still entitled to all that extension money until 2013)

Check out my predictions here:  Super Sundays: An NFL Obsession

And here's how it really went down.

Feature Games:

Oakland at Pittsburgh    3-35
Okay, so I gave Oakland a little too much credit.  But I knew they'd lose.  And I still don't believe this proves anything about the Steelers.

Cleveland at Jacksonville  20-24
The final of this game SHOULD have been 20-17.  But the Browns seem to have a problem with giving up the biggest possible play at the most inopportune moment.  MJD is a beast and the Jaguars are extremely lucky.

Houston at NY Jets  27-30
For real?  Again?  How many times do the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets have to luck up at the end of the game before people start questioning their AFC prowess.  (They're playing a bruised Cincy team on Thanksgiving.  The luck may be over.)

Indianapolis at New England  28-31
I remember when Peyton Manning had his team in position to make my predicted score exactly right.  And then he had an Eli moment.  This young Patriots defense made enough plays to hold on for a victory.  Bottom line:  You don't mess with Tom Brady's hair.

Green Bay at Minnesota  31-3
I'm not going to mention that my team failed to score a touchdown for the first time all season.  I'm not going to mention that this is their worst loss of the season.  I'm not even going to mention that this game was so bad it resulted in the head coach finally being fired.  When you can't say anything good, it's best to move on....

Seattle at New Orleans  19-34
They're hopeful down in the Big Easy.  Why?  Because the Saints quietly have one of the best records in the NFC.  I hate to say it, but they look to be playoff bound once again.

NY Giants at Philadelphia  17-27
Earlier I said that Peyton Manning had an Eli moment.  The younger Manning's 4 turnovers make me expecting a Giant meltdown in the remainder of the season.

The Rest

Redskins at Titans          19-16 OT
Ravens at Panthers          37-13
Cardinals at Chiefs         13-31
Lions at Cowboys            19-35
Bills at Bengals            49-31
Bucs at 49ers               21-0
Falcons at Rams             34-17
Broncos at Chargers         14-35

So, based on my predictions vs actual scores, my first official record for the NFL season is:  7-8

But don't count me out just yet.  More predictions on in Week 12, beginning with the Thursday games.
And now my NFL photo of the week:

When bad English and bad football come together, the possibilities are endless.  Enjoy your week.

Thankful for the Little Things

So, the last couple days, I've been a little down.  But this morning brought about a welcomed surprise.

My sister (twin extraordinaire) sent me some cash today.  Although it wasn't much, I found myself smiling, and very grateful.  It's moments like these when I'm reminded that I am blessed and have much to be thankful for.  Plus, it adds to the tab, began circa 1985, of my growing debt to my twin.  $4,765,239.62!!!  Lmao.

While this is a gross exaggeration, I use it to show her that I'll always be indebted to her, simply because she loves me enough to think of me.  One day, I'll pay back dividends with interest.

Appreciate the ones who love you.  Stay humble, and thankful.

Things That Make You Go Hmmm....

Hey, Hey, Hey!!!  I'll Be the Judge of That!

Ever here the one about the federal judge, the coke-sniffing hooker, and the FBI?

While this sounds like the beginnings of a wickedly funny joke, it's actually the main ingredients of sad but true events.  While I was watching the news earlier this week (I try to catch it every morning, but sometimes my crazy sleep habits prevents this), I came across a story that made me think "damn, can people really be that reckless?"

A 67 year old federal judge, Jack Camp Jr., pled guilty to two counts of drug charges on Friday.

The Senior US District Court Judge also admitted to giving a woman money to by drugs, as well as one count of conversion of government property.

Apparently, the naughty judge gave this lady friend a government-issued laptop.  The fact that the lady was Sherry Ann Ramos, a 26 year old prostitute is merely icing on corruption's cake.

What type of society do we live in where those supposedly in the authority to interpret and uphold the laws are the ones breaking them?  FBI agents arrested Camp on October 1, after he attempted to purchase drugs from an undercover officer.  Prosecutors also say that the judge gave Ramos money to buy cocaine, marijuana, and roxicodone, which the two frequently used together.

Camp will be sentenced on March 4.

A statement issued by the former judges' attorneys, which seems a bit idiotic in my opinion, says that Camp has taken responsibility, and will spend the next several months trying to understand the "uncharacteristic nature of his actions."

Let me just say that if it was sooo uncharacteristic, why did it happen multiple times?

Sadly, I'm not surprised.  I feel like if we do a clean sweep of the current justice system we'll find far too many figures like Camp in positions of power.  And the problem will persist, until someone attempts to change it.

Art for the Sake of Art

Been cruising the web today, and came across an awesome artist hailing from the Netherlands, whose creativity and methods should inspire countless souls around the world.

Florentijn Hofman uses creative mediums and the world as his canvas, to create artwork and scuplture that is as daring as it is beautiful.  He often collaborates with the communities that display his work, in order to create projects that promote motivation and togetherness.  Check out some of his creations below.

I was told earlier by a good friend that I was in a funk.  The fact that I was moping around, pouting, and contemplating going to sleep at 9:00 p.m., made me think they were absolutely right.  So what's the best way to get rid of a funk, you ask?  Sleep it away?  Well, I've been up all night, and it is now 6:10 a.m.  I've sat up most of the night, scanning other blogs, listening to music, playing chess on Facebook, watching spoken word clips on YouTube (Shouts out to Mayda del Valle!!), and other random things that I did as the mood struck me.  But mainly, I've thought about all of my worries.  I've also thought about what I'm fortunate to have.  We're approaching a time when people suddenly remember what they take for granted 364 other days (give or take).  And while sometimes the people in my life frustrate me, I do appreciate each of them.  They are passionate, caring, considerate, thoughtful, loving, supportive, critical, demanding, and honest with me, and that's exactly why I love them all.  While I still believe that it is up to me to do for myself now, I realize that nobody gets anywhere without a little bit of help.  Thanks in advance for mine.

And Then It Hits You

Sometimes it feels like I can't depend on anyone but myself.  I hate feeling this way, but sometimes, it's the only way I know to feel.  Fuck everything else.  It's time to take care of me.  I won't let me down.

Super Sundays: An NFL Obsession

Okay.  I'm sure I've stated quite a few times that I'm an avid sports fan.  Football is my favorite sport, which is probably why Sundays usually find my postings few and far between.  Since we've entered the portion of the NFL season where it's time for teams to put up or shut up, I'm dedicating my Sundays to picking my favorites and giving my take on the season so far.

Let me just say that I am without a doubt, a Minnesota Vikings fan.  But with the three ring circus that has become my favorite team, I can honestly say that I have little hope for a miraculous turnaround.  If we can end up 8-8 this season, as a fan I'll take it.  (A lot better than the 5-11 record they seem to be aiming for)

So here are my predictions for this week, with a few notes on how I arrived at that conclusion.

Enjoy the games.

(Disclaimer: In the case that you are simple enough to go to a gambling location and place bets based on these picks, know that I may be one of the unluckiest people in the world.  It is ill advised, and I am in no way responsible if you lose.  I am not an expert, at anything.  Except being me.  Might I suggest that you simply mail ME your money...lmao)

NFL Week 11 Predictions

This should be an interesting week.  The games that everyone will be talking about are the Giants vs Eagles matchup in the NFC, and the Patriots vs Colts in the AFC.  Both of these games have huge playoff implications and could crown two teams as Super Bowl front runners.  With the dynamic play of Hakeem Nicks, Michael Vick, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning, the highlight reels should key in on both contests.

AFC

Oakland (5-4) at Pittsburgh (6-3)  13-24

For weeks I've been telling friends that the Steelers are pretenders.  I still hold on to that belief.  But even more so are the Oakland Raiders.  They are a team that seems put together well only on paper.  Too many close calls.  Too many question marks.  But the bottom line is, when Darren McFadden plays poorly, the Raiders lose.  Enter the Pittsburgh defense that just gave up it's worst performance to date against the Patriots a week ago.  Not going to happen again.

Cleveland (3-6) at Jacksonville (5-4)  20-14

I like the Browns defense.  That said, I think their offensive playbook should be renamed Peyton Hillis.  He's a monster in between the tackles, and today going up against a defense that should thank their lucky stars that wacky finishes keep getting their team undeserved victories.  If Cleveland can contain MJD (Maurice Jones-Drew for those out of the football loop), then this should equal a win for a 3-6 Browns team that plays much better than their record.

Houston (4-5) at NY Jets (7-2)  21-10

Most people who see this score will think I'm crazy.  And granted the Texans seem to be doing exactly what they do best:  falling apart in the middle of the season.  But to me the Jets are the most unimpressive 7-2 team in the NFL.  And without two spectacular OT finishes, in games that they trailed in the 4th quarter, this same Jets team would be 5-4.  But we can live in the what ifs, so unless the Jets can find a way to put together a WHOLE game of good football, an explosive offense like the Texans, led by Matt Shaub and Andre Johnson, will make them suffer for it.

Indianapolis (6-3) at New England (7-2) 35-21

This is going to be a shootout.  We've heard all the talk about the starting QBs.  We know that both teams seem to be on pace for deep post-season runs.  We know that this has become a rivalry as big as in the minds of coaches, fans, and players as are the respective Indy vs Hou and NE vs Jets rivalries are.  And we know that for the most part, New England seems to have the Colts figured out, as Tom Brady has a 7-4 head to head advantage over his often compared counterpart.  But stemming back to the Bill Belichick's rare bonehead coaching decision to go for it on 4th and 2 from his team's 28 yard line, this matchup has taking on new life for Peyton Manning and company.  Too many holes in that young Patriots defense will give the elder Manning a big day.

NFC

Green Bay (6-3) at Minnesota (3-6)  21-28

I know what you're thinking.  He picked his team to win.  Well yes, I did, but not because I'm a fan.  The truth of the matter is that I watched the last game.  It was a game that even with the 3 Brett Favre interceptions, and all the disputed touchdowns, Minnesota was in position to win that game.  This one takes place in the dome, where the Vikings have managed their only 3 wins of the season.  The return of Sidney Rice, while in a limited capacity, makes me give the Purple and Gold the advantage.

Seattle (5-4) at New Orleans (6-3)  7-17

This is a game that nobody seems to realize is even going on.  Most people aren't aware that the Seahawks are in first place in a division that, in my opinion, should for the first time ever be forced to give up its playoff spot to a more deserving team from a different division.  Most people don't even remember that the Saints won the Super Bowl last season, and if they do, they immediately write them off, not realizing that they have the same record as the Ravens, Steelers, Colts, Giants, Eagles, and Packers.  And they're just a win behind the Jets, Patriots, Bears, and Falcons.  The teams I just mentioned are the supposed NFL elite.  The Saints, who get Reggie Bush back this week from injury, are right there with them.  At least in wins and losses.  But then again, so are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

NY Giants (6-3) at Philadelphia (6-3)  24-17

And cue the head scratching.  Yes, I realize that Michael Vick may be the most explosive player in football right now.  And yes, I realize that the Giants just got there asses kicked by a Cowboys team so lowly that they lost to the Vikings this season (and may very well lose to Detroit today).  But I'm standing by not only my pick, but my assertion that Philly only scores two TDs tonight.  This Giants defense gets after the QB like another team that had. (Picture the Tyree ball-on-the-top-of-the-helmet catch, and the Patriots almost-perfect season)  I just don't believe Vick is going to significantly affect a defense with such a dominating front four, plus a secondary that moved from last year's laughing stock to helping create the league's top ranked defense.  Vick will put the ball in the endzone, but turnovers help the Giants win this one.

Other Predictions

Redskins  (4-5)   14
Titans       (5-4)   10

Ravens       (6-3)   35
Panthers   (1-8)   10

Bucs         (6-3)   13
49ers        (3-6)    7

Say What? (Awesome RePost #3)

I was cruising through some of my favorite blogs to check out when I came across this photo posted by Morgan Farruya (who allow me to say constantly drips with awesomeness through amazing pics and posts).  All I can say is that it was a "shaking my damn head" moment.  A part of me was happy that Rihanna expresses herself fully and at all times, but the parent in me makes me wonder if I'd want my child to have to ask their favorite singer what "Fuck You" means

Of course, in these days, I imagine most kids have heard worse.

And Exactly Where Do You Think You're Sticking That Metal Detector?

Thanksgiving Day is upon us.  And for many people in the United States, and throughout the world, that means it's off to the airport soon.  Thanks to a supposedly improving economy, there will be an expected surge in Thanksgiving travel, according to a forecast released Tuesday.

CNN reported this morning that both the motorist group AAA and IHS Global Insight project more than 42 million people will be traveling at least 50 miles from home for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. This is an increase of more than 11% from last year's 38 million people, who traveled during the 5-day holiday period.  While I don't see the immediate benefits of this "improving" economy, I'm sure that the 1.5 million people who are expected to fly are fretting about it.  Many recent reports have come about the ill-received new security measures at several major airports.  You've seen the pictures:

I've always wondered why none of these people look happy.  Ever.  It's the same in every airport photo you see.  The people boarding appear to be nervous, angry, on edge, etc.  And now with increased security measures, it is documented that boarding a flight may take even LONGER.

So exactly what are these new security measures you ask?

Well, by now, I'm sure you've heard mention of the full body scanners currently in place at over four dozen airports throughout the country.  The media has done several stories on the fears of radiation exposure and the outrage over invasive "virtual strip-search" style images that the machine displays. (See below)

(To me, this looks like an elevator with no door.  Not quite as imposing as I expected it to be)

(Okay, the detail of these images is a little disturbing.  Plus I'm not even going to ask if that's
a tail coming from between the legs.  Lol)

Hoping that these annoying machines will go away with the public outcry?  Think again. In June, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) had spent well over $80 million for about 500 machines, including 133 now at airports, with plans to install about 1,000 by the end of 2011.  Which means the scanners are here to stay.  But what most passengers don't realize, is that you can always refuse.

Which brings up the pat-down.

Just this month, TSA's new screening procedures began including a full-body pat-down, performed by administration officials of the passenger's own gender, and only if the passenger refused exposure to the full body scan or set off the alarm of a security device, such as scanner or metal detector, while passing through. Critics charge that the new procedure is excessively invasive, as the pat-down touched the genital areas.  Or according to ACLU legislative counsel, passengers must now choose between "a virtual strip search and a grope".

Of course you could refuse both.  But then you become this guy:

Meet John Tyner, also known as Mr. "If You Touch My Junk, I’m Going to Have You Arrested".  Tyner was simultaneously thrown out of San Diego International Airport on Saturday morning for refusing to submit to a security check and threatened with a lawsuit and a $10,000 fine if he left without submission.  That's because once passengers present their identification and their ticket, they have to finish going through security. If the passenger changes their mind and wants to leave because they don’t want the body pat-down, they’re subject to a hefty fine. TSA officials claim that this is in place because it doesn’t want terrorists probing the security system.  Of course Tyner has since reached the hallowed halls of YouTube fame, by recording the entire ordeal with his cell phone.  There are multiple videos, but I felt the best way for those interested to get the full story is from Mr. Tyner himself.

http://johnnyedge.blogspot.com/2010/11/these-events-took-place-roughly-between.html

So, basically if you avoid the full body scanner, you're subjected to the pat-down.  If you refuse the pat-down, you're at risk of being sued by the TSA.  Sounds lovely. (Insert dripping sarcasm here)

Remember the good old days of standard airport security?  Well guess what, those days are gone.  The TSA measures may seem invasive, extreme, and any other adjective you can think of to let people know that you don't like it, but the bottom line is that it's for safety.  We live in a world now where the threats have changed.  Smarter criminals require evolving measures in order to assure maximum protection.  Maybe refusing these measures is the last thing we need right now.

Personally, I've never been on a plane.  But I'd feel safer knowing that there are such in-depth security measures in place than the same old ones that have been bested for years.  In the next few days, millions of Americans will be traveling to see loved ones in order to share in a celebrated tradition of giving thanks for the things we appreciate the most.  If being irritated by some revealing virtual images or patted down by a security agent ensures safe delivery of those who we give thanks for, then I'm all for it.  Remember everything is a progression. Eventually the measures will get better and less invasive.  Until then, we have this:

I guess if you're still outraged, you could participate in an online campaign calling for a National Opt-Out Day on Nov. 24, the day before Thanksgiving and one of the busiest travel days.  Personally, as I think of all the travelers attempting to get to Grandma's sweet potato pie, I think their campaign will fail.  If you're buying a plan ticket this holiday season, then you're subject to the rules and regulations of that binding contract.  Point blank.  If you don't like the security measures, don't fly.  You can always take the bus.

Enjoy your holiday travel, and above all else, be safe.

LMAO (Sometimes It's Good For The Soul)

Today has been one of those sluggish, nothing seems to go right kind of days.  I'm irritable.  I've slept a lot.  I'm broke, so can't really go out.  So I needed to find some things to occupy my time.  I was watching tv earlier and happened to come across one of my favorite stand-up comedy routines of all time.  To me, Dave Chappelle has always been hilarious.  And I appreciate his stand-up bits more than the sketches.  So here is one of the funniest segments of the show.  Dave Chappelle: Killing Them Softly.  Laugh out loud!!

I'm a Quitter....Well, At Least I Really Hope So

I'm sure many of you are ready the title of this post, and thinking 'what in the world is wrong with him?'.  So let me explain.  Today is my official quit day.  What am I quitting you ask?  A whole bunch of things.  It's so often that we look at quitting as something negative or cowardly, but often it can be positive and sometimes the most courageous thing that you can do.  I've compiled a list of 'things' that I'm going to quit, hopefully by the beginning of the year.  Success is key to my overall well being and happiness.  I think that should be motivation enough.  So I present my quit list.

QUIT LIST

1)  Smoking -  the people who are closest to me are probably shaking their heads as they read, thinking "yeah, whatever..."  I guess that's because the truth is, I've said this many times.  I've acted like I was going to do this many times.  And I've lied to others and myself, MANY TIMES.  I've thought about it in the past about what motivates me to do things, and have now come to the conclusion that smoking is a false addiction for me.  I can't recall the last time I've truly craved a cigarette.  95% of my smoking is habitual.  This one might be hard, but suprisingly, I feel like it's the easiest on my list.

2)  Making Excuses  - I recently sat myself down for a long introspection, and came to one unsettling conclusion.
IT'S MY FAULT
Those are three very powerful words that motivate the hell out of you, let me tell you.  I realize that all of the major grievances that I have with my current situation were directly or indirectly caused by something I did.  I'm the one who chose to party it up at UNC (Shout out to the Tarheels!!!), instead of focusing on school.  I'm the one who decided that I couldn't afford to work, do the academic probation, and still enjoy myself.  So it's my fault I didn't finish school.  I'm the one who came to work at least a minute late, everyday for weeks at a time.  I'm the one who decided to stop working as hard as I could, because I was frustrated with constantly doing more work than most of my coworkers.  Funny thing is, they still work there, and I'm unemployed.  Once again, my fault.  I'm the one who tries to love from a distance.  The one who watches hearts build and build and then runs away for cover.  I'm the one who keeps messing up a good thing.  And now I've walked away from unconditional love.  Once again, my fault.

But now that there are no more excuses, what's next?  You can fix something that's wrong if you're always trying to justify it.  Maybe I don't have the fix for these things yet, but I'm ready to look for them.

3) Being Afraid of Failure - I look back over my life, recall all of these people (relatives, teachers, youth counselors, pastors, etc.) telling me about this wonderful potential that I have.  I've been constantly told how talented I am, how intelligent, how creative, how resourceful....all of that good stuff.  The interesting thing is that none of it has ever produced anything that I can look at and be proud.  Sure there have been awards, recognitions, test scores, and acceptance letters that made me smile and hear others say "well done."  But the truth is, I expected these things.  In fact, I'm disappointed that I didn't get more of them.  I could have been the 1600 SAT score student with the straight As since elementary school.  If I had wanted to be.  But somewhere along the line, I accepted mediocrity as a trade, in order to avoid failure.  What if I tried, and didn't succeed to the level or expectations that I wanted?  What did it say about me?  Would I suddenly become less than I thought I was, because I failed?  The idea has stagnated so many opportunities and chances, all because I was unwilling to try since I was afraid to fail.  Well, no more!!

So basically these are three major things that I want to quit.  Quitting won't be easy, but I'm prepared to do it.  I don't want to end up being a scared, 80 year old chain smoker who can only come up with excuses to why things got that way.  Here's to trying to better ourselves.  Whether it's things you need to quit, or things you need to start doing, I urge each of you to look within, and strive to become a better, happier you.  Much love.
