Rare Music

This page is a dedicated to presenting music from artists that I love but who, for some reason or another, I feel like most people have never heard.  The music industry is full of amazing talent that is misappropriated among the masses of the mundane.  (Don't you just love alliteration? lol...but I digress)

This list will evolve rapidly and often, since I am a music junkie!!  Enjoy the sounds, and feel free to email me any suggestions.

"Sincerely, Jane" --- Janelle Monae

Her talent seems limitless....her sound defines fusion...and her message desperately needs to be heard.  If you haven't listened to Janelle Monae, do yourself a favor and start today.

"Closer" --- Kings of Leon

The rest of the world is finally catching up on Kings of Leon, and rightfully so.  The bluesy baritone twangs of lead singer Caleb Followill seem to make nearly any song sound good.  The Oct. 18th release of the group's new album (Come Around Sundown) should offer up plenty of new hits to listen to.

Wale - The Black & Gold .mp3

"Black & Gold" --- Wale ft. Sam Sparro

DC native rapper Wale has been making great strides on the hip-hip scene since his 2009 debut.  Go go influenced samples and an edgy lyricism that displays his skills are sure to make him a crowd favorite.  This song is a prime example of the ease at which Wale operates outside the box that surrounds most of hip-hop.

Foreign Exchange - Happiness .mp3

"Happiness" --- The Foreign Exchange

And speaking of hip-hop, NC hip-hop afficionados will recognize front-man Phonte Coleman from the group Little Brother.  Now paired with another amazing producer (Nicolay, of the Netherlands), the rapper and singer creates a unique balance resulting in what I simply call "feel good music".  Apparently, others believe so to as The Foreign Exchange was nominated for a Grammy in 2009.

Francis and the Lights - For Days .mp3

"For Days" --- Francis and the Lights

I'm an '80s baby and the music from this sound just immediately makes me smile, flooding my brain with images of Prince fronted jam sessions.  That being said, it seems to me that this group has as many different sounds as a DID sufferer has personalities, but this is a wonderful thing, because each of these sounds has one distinct common factor.  They all just make you want to dance.  Working with acts such as Kanye West, MGMT, and Drake points to a high likelihood that soon Francis and the Lights will be a household name.

 ok go - a million ways .mp3

"A Million Ways" --- OK Go

OK Go has quickly become known for funky good music and viral videos that everybody's seen. Plus, front man Damian Kulash has a voice that fits all moods. This song, whose music video became the most downloaded ever, with over 9 million, is infectious. Even if you don't want to listen, you can't. But why would you not want to do that?
