The Tuesday Groove, Aug. 16, 2011

Today began with an epic bad morning.  I overslept and missed my bus, before finally realizing that I had the wrong information for the appointment I was trying to make.  It was at this time that I decided to go back inside and escape to the comforts of a mind numbing nap.  But suddenly, something hit me.  What for?  Even though the morning started out wrong, it didn't mean my entire day had to be ruined.  So I rose again, changed my clothes, and decided to go out and do the one thing I love to do:  Write!!!  And that led me to one of my favorite writing spots, currently enriched in a rejuvenating writing session.  But I needed to share the song that served as new fuel to my day.  It really got me grooving again.

Breathe Carolina --- Blackout

These guys are so much fun.  This song makes me want to dance.  And dancing, even awkwardly, is one of the quickest ways to get over a bad day.

when life gets you down, body bump!!!

No matter what state your life is in, try to keep on grooving.

Tuesday Groove, July 19, 2011

Bringing back the groove again!!! Music really lifts the spirits and makes people feel good. And Tuesday is right there at the beginning of the week, where some lifting is always in order. So welcome back, Tuesday Groove.

Today, I decided to take it back just a bit.

This is one of those CDs that should be in your collection if you're a fan of R&B. I mean you have Raphael Saadiq, Dawn Robinson, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad in the same group!  These three artists were members of three of the most influential groups in hip-hop and R&B: Tony! Toni! Tone!, En Vogue, and A Tribe Called Quest, respectively.  By coming together, they brought a great 90s vibe to the early part of the 2000s.  This by far was their biggest hit.

Lucy Pearl --- Dance Tonight

This song just makes me want to dance.  Makes me want to smile.  Makes me feel like tonight, everything will be okay.  And when a song can do that, it is always appreciated.

Tuesday Groove, June 21, 2011

Since I'm bringing back the classics, I thought I'd start my Tuesday off right with something groovy that I've been cranking all week.

tUnE-yArDs --- the Bizness

(You have to love the StudlyCaps!!)  This is music that simply rocks!  From Merrill Garbus comes the brilliant notion of sound creating whatever vibe you choose to specify, all incorporated with her powerful voice.  Throw in the musical genius of Eli Crews and Nate Brenner, and you have something magical.  I can listen to this song over and over, and get as strong a connection to it on play number 10 as I did on play 2.  It's just that awesome.

Tuesday Grove (Yeah, Yeah, It's Thursday...Sue Me) May 11, 2011

* A Rare Poet Notice:  I know that I haven't posted much music lately.  Hell, I haven't posted much of anything.  Guess I'm still transitioning with this move, but I promise the blog will be back in full swing soon.  *

Sean Hayes --- Powerful Stuff

From the very first moment I saw the Suburu commercial, I couldn't get this awesome ditty out of my mind.  Raised in North Carolina, Sean Hayes has one of those voices that stops you and pulls in your attention.  Even better, he is also a songwriter, a testament to this songs feel good, move many, lyrics.  Enjoy.

The Even Though It's Not Tuesday Groove, Apr. 14, 2011

Yes, I'm well aware that it is now Thursday.  And yet it's been far too long since I've posted some music.  So welcome to the even though it's not Tuesday groove.  Some great songs, simply one day later than usual.  Hopefully it's enjoyed.  Since I haven't posted in a while, here are SIX groovy tunes for your listening pleasure!!

Frank Ocean --- Novacane

Yes, he's often associated with perhaps one of the most controversial groups to hit the hip-hop scene since the Wu-Tang Clan (Google OFWGKTA).  But Frank Ocean is a lot more than that.  He's a songwriter for such huge acts as John Legend, Brandy, and yes, Justin Bieber.  He has the type of voice and lyrics that R&B music is in desperate need of.  If you're sick of all the Trey Songz music on the radio, then you should definitely give Frank Ocean a listen.  The lyrics to this particular song are that superb blend between witty truth and intense storytelling that makes it an instant favorite.  Plus the music is addictive.

Cee-Lo Green --- Brighter Lights, Bigger City

From Goodie Mob to Gnarls Barkley, Cee-Lo has been making great music for several years.  His latest solo project, The Lady Killer, is a testament to his ability to make much appreciated mainstream music, and still not abandon his own unique sense of style and sound.  This is just one of the many songs from the album that I am grooving to lately.

Diddy Dirty Money --- Last Night Pt. 2

Personally, I was one of those people who became sick of all the Making the Band reality shows.  Of course, I still watched them.  Sean 'Diddy' Combs has an energy about him that makes Burger King commercials seem like important events.  And it is this larger-than-life persona that adds so much appeal to this group.  Plus, in my opinion, he's come a LONG way with his vocals.  This particular song is an immense upgrade to the song "Last Night", the top 10 single, featuring Keyshia Cole, from Diddy's last solo album, Press Play.

Carlos St. John --- Building My Empire

Most people still have no clue who Carlos St. John is.  Which only means that when he's in the upper echelon of the hip-hop world, I can tell people I was onto him years ahead of the game.  This song's hook is so hypnotic, and it speaks to everyone who's ever had a dream that's bigger than others can imagine.

Warpaint --- Elephants

This Los Angeles quartet of fierce ladies exploded on the scene in early 2009 with an experimental rock sound that impressed several members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Fueled by their promising debut album, The Fool, Warpaint is sure to turn some heads in the near future.

Skylar Grey --- Love the Way You Lie (Original Demo)

If you ask most people who Holly Brook Haffermann is, you'll probably receive a blank stare.  But asking about Skylar Grey, the 25 yr old singer-songwriter's stage name, will suddenly produce quite the buzz.  Following major collaborations with Eminem, Diddy-Dirty Money, and Dr. Dre, Skylar is set to be a major pop sensation.  Here is the song that her writing skills helped culminate in a Song of the Year Grammy.  Personally, I prefer this version to Rihanna's.

So there you have it.  A diverse group of amazing musicians.  Hopefully, you enjoy them as much as I do.

The Tuesday Groove, March 29, 2011

It's once again time for the Tuesday Groove.  There are a lot of things on my mind right now, and the three songs I chose kind of go along with what I'm thinking.  Enjoy.

India Arie --- The Heart of the Matter

I think I really feel this song, because I am seeking forgiveness.  From quite a few people.  And because I am uncertain if I have it, or it is even deserved, I find it hard to move on.  I've said I'm sorry many times in my life.  And meant it.  Hopefully that was understood.

Babyface --- Sorry for the Stupid Things

And there is someone who, right now, is being affected by all of my past issues.  Hopefully she understands that my stupidity has nothing to with how much I care.

Plain White T's --- Rhythm of Love

This song helps remind me that, whether for a lifetime or only one night, we should love those moments that make us happy, and treasure the people who make those moments possible.  I'm learning.

So there you have it.  Full of regret, steady making mistakes, and yet I'm still longing to float in love's clouds. Hopefully some day soon.

The Tuesday Groove, March 22, 2011

So, I've been doing some 'blogger soul-searching' lately, and have come to the conclusion that this blog has no real focus.  It's random, like I am, which is not necessarily a bad thing.  But random posting is hard to organize, and hard to get people to relate to.  So in the spirit of organization and presenting things that are easy to relate to, I have decided to only post music on Tuesdays.

Yes, I know.  *sad face*  It hurts me, too!

But instead of one song, I'll upload at least THREE for your listening pleasure.  So maybe it'll all balance out in the end.

So without further bantering, I present the Tuesday Groove:

With one of the music industry's most well received festivals wrapping up this past Sunday, I am still pining all the killer artists and bands that I didn't get to see at SXSW (South by Southwest). Though the Cool Kids and B.o.B. would have been near the top of my list, here are some other acts I wish I could have caught.

The Kills --- Satellite

I remember when a friend of mine put me on to this group back in like '05 (with an awesome song called Superstition), and I was expecting them to really hit big.  While they have always held weight on the indie scene, it finally seems like the rest of the world is read to take notice.

Lenka --- The Show

Lenka is such a feel-good indulgence, that you don't care who looks at you cross eyed while you're singing her 'awaken the karaoke star in you' lyrics, while in line at the local supermarket. Or maybe that's just me...lol. Don't judge me:  this song just demands that I sing along!!

Fitz and the Tantrums --- Don't Got to Work it Out

One of the coolest and most unconventional R&B groups on the scene right now, Michael Fitzpatrick and company deliver funky performances in a genre that could use a few alternate sounds. I personally am sick of hearing Trey Songz and Chris Brown all the damn time!!  Besides, Noelle Scaggs is so awesome.

So there you have it, the Tuesday Groove, for March 22, 2011, with emphasis on just a few of the amazing acts at this past week's SXSW music festival.  I, for one, am already planning to be in Austin this time next year.   Have a great Tuesday, folks, and spend today trying to find a way to truly enjoy your groove.
